Why go to Ladakh
Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert that feels like another planet. Think barren brown mountains, deep blue skies, whitewashed monasteries and prayer flags fluttering on some of the highest motorable roads in the world. Nubra Valley surprises you with sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels at Hunder, Pangong Lake shifts through shades of blue, and Turtuk offers a glimpse of Balti village life near the border. It is a bucket-list trip for road trippers, bikers and anyone who loves big landscapes.
Best time to visit
May to September is the main travel season, when the roads are open and days are pleasant. Nights stay cold even in summer. Winter is extremely cold and many high routes close.
How to reach
Leh airport (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport) has direct flights from Delhi and a few other cities, and is the easiest way in. Leh is also reached by road via Manali or Srinagar during the summer months. Flying in means arriving straight at high altitude, so a day of rest to acclimatise is essential.
