Living root bridges, Cherrapunji's waterfalls and the clear waters of Dawki: Meghalaya backpacking trips into the abode of clouds.

1 trip

Why go to Meghalaya

Meghalaya, the abode of clouds, is one of the greenest corners of India. The state is famous for its living root bridges, grown over generations by the Khasi people, including the double decker root bridge at Nongriat. Cherrapunji (Sohra) is packed with dramatic waterfalls like Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters, Laitlum Canyon offers huge views over the hills, and Dawki's Umngot river is known for water so clear boats appear to float. Mawlynnong, often called one of the cleanest villages in Asia, completes the picture.

Best time to visit

October to April is a good window for sightseeing, with clearer skies and comfortable weather, and September to December is especially lovely after the rains. The monsoon, roughly June to September, is when the waterfalls are at their fullest, but expect heavy rain and slippery trails.

How to reach

Guwahati in Assam is the main gateway, with Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and a major railway station. From Guwahati, Shillong is a scenic drive past Umiam Lake.
