Overview

A road trip of about 700 km through Ladakh: Leh, Sham Valley, Nubra Valley, Turtuk and Pangong Tso. It is a 6 Nights / 7 Days group trip that starts and ends in Leh; it does not start from Delhi, so you make your own way to Leh. You can ride your own bike, ride a rented bike solo or as a pair, or travel in an SUV or tempo traveller. Plan to reach Leh at least one day before the trip starts so that you complete the 48 hours of acclimatisation the government SOPs ask for.

Day 1 is for arriving and acclimatising in Leh. Day 2 is a Sham Valley excursion to the Hall of Fame, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar. Day 3 crosses Khardung La to Nubra Valley, with stops at Diskit Monastery and the Hunder sand dunes. Day 4 is a day trip to Turtuk and back. Day 5 runs from Nubra to Pangong Tso via Shyok for a night in camps by the lake, Day 6 returns to Leh over Chang La, and Day 7 is departure. Stays are in hotels, camps, cottages and homestays on triple sharing, with a backup vehicle, a mechanic, inner line permits and an oxygen cylinder along. Batches run from May to July. Prices start at β‚Ή14,000 per person for the Own Bike option on triple sharing (5% GST extra).

Day-wise itinerary

  1. 01Day 1Arrival at Leh

Arrive in Leh, where our representative welcomes you. Today is for acclimatising to the cold and the altitude. Overnight stay at the hotel.

  2. 02Day 2Leh local sightseeing: Sham Valley

After breakfast, leave for an excursion to Sham Valley. Visit the Hall of Fame, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

  3. 03Day 3Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La

After breakfast, set off for Nubra Valley. Ride over Khardung La and spend some time at the top. Ride to Diskit Monastery for a view over Nubra Valley. Stop at the Hunder sand dunes, known for double-humped camel rides in the cold desert. Dinner and overnight stay at camps or cottages.

  4. 04Day 4Nubra to Turtuk and back

After breakfast, drive towards Turtuk. Turtuk is the last outpost in India before Pakistan-controlled Gilgit-Baltistan begins, and one of the gateways to the Siachen Glacier. The village is culturally, linguistically and historically different from the rest of the trip, and the landscape changes too, with narrow valleys and steep mountains unlike Central Ladakh and Nubra. Return to Nubra Valley for dinner. Overnight stay in camps at Nubra Valley.

  5. 05Day 5Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok

After breakfast, leave Nubra Valley for Pangong Tso. Arrive at Pangong Tso in the late afternoon. The lake is known for changing colour several times a day. Spend the evening by the lake, with snow-capped mountains around it. Dinner and overnight stay at camps at Pangong.

  6. 06Day 6Pangong Tso to Leh via Chang La

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the lake. After breakfast, head back to Leh, crossing Chang La on the way. Reach Leh by evening and explore the local markets and cafes on your last evening in Leh. Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

  7. 07Day 7Departure from Leh

After breakfast, depart from Leh for your onward journey. The trip ends here.

Pickup points

  • Leh
  • Arrive in Leh at least one day before the trip starts. Under the government SOPs, all travellers must acclimatise in Leh for 48 hours. One day of acclimatisation is included in the package; the extra day before it is your own arrangement, or our team can help you book it.
  • If you choose not to arrive a day in advance, we can't be held responsible for any acclimatisation issues. Permits are arranged on the assumption that you arrived one day prior.
  • No active physical exertion on your first two days in Leh. Have a light meal on the day you arrive.
  • Drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water a day and avoid alcohol, smoking and sedatives.
  • The itinerary's advisory is Diamox 250 mg (acetazolamide) twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner, starting at least two days before you travel to Leh and continuing for two days after you arrive. Consult your own doctor before the trip.
  • If you notice symptoms of HAPE, HACE or AMS, consult a doctor immediately.
  • Any damage to the bike is borne by the rider.
  • You will be travelling in a high-altitude cold desert with very few medical facilities. We aren't responsible for medical emergencies; we will help arrange logistics if needed, and the expenses are borne by the traveller. Tell us about any existing health issues before you travel.
  • Rooms are on triple sharing by default. Twin sharing costs β‚Ή2,000 extra per person and single sharing β‚Ή7,000 extra per person.
  • An extra mattress is provided for the third person in triple-sharing rooms.
  • Only postpaid mobile connections (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in the region.
  • Breakfast at the hotel on the last day depends on your departure timing.
  • Hotels in Ladakh are more basic than in other parts of the country, and the terrain and weather are harsh and unpredictable.
  • Hotels are subject to availability. If a booked hotel is unavailable, you are moved to a comparable property.
  • Rates can change if services or hotels change. Any cost increase from changes to the package, such as the number of guests or hotel adjustments, is borne by the traveller.
  • The itinerary can change because of weather, road conditions, the physical ability of participants or other disruptions, in the interest of safety, without changing the overall duration of the tour.

FAQs

Where does the trip start, and how do I get there?

The trip starts and ends in Leh, not Delhi. You reach Leh on your own, and our representative receives you on arrival. Per person on triple sharing: Own Bike β‚Ή14,000, Solo Rider β‚Ή23,000, Dual Rider β‚Ή18,000 and SUV / Tempo Traveller β‚Ή16,000. The biking options include the rented bike and fuel as per the itinerary; the SUV / Tempo Traveller option covers the whole route by vehicle, depending on group size. 5% GST is extra.

What do twin and single sharing rooms cost?

Are the bike, fuel and riding gear included?

On the biking options, the bike rental for 5 days (Leh to Leh) and fuel as per the itinerary are included, along with a helmet, riding gloves (riders only), elbow guards and knee pads. We still recommend carrying your own helmet and gear for comfort. A mechanic with spare parts and a backup vehicle for luggage travel with the group. Any damage to the bike is borne by the rider.
