Overview

This 11 Nights / 12 Days road trip is a loop from Manali to Leh and back, going out past Gumbok Rangan and returning through Hanle, Umling La, Tso Moriri and Sarchu. You can ride your own bike, ride a rented bike solo or with a pillion, or travel in an SUV or Tempo Traveller. The package includes Volvo transfers from Delhi to Manali and back: the bus leaves Delhi at 7:30 PM, and you reach Delhi again in the morning after the last evening in Manali. Batches run from May to September.

After a day in Manali, you collect the bikes and ride through Atal Tunnel and Keylong to camps at Gumbok Rangan, then on to Leh. From Leh the route goes over Khardung La to Nubra Valley, along the Shyok river to Pangong Tso, and past Chushul and the Rezang La War Memorial to Hanle. A day's ride takes you up to Umling La and back to Hanle, before you continue through Puga Valley to Tso Moriri, across the Moore Plains to Sarchu and over Baralacha La to Manali. Prices start at β‚Ή16,000 per person on triple sharing with your own bike (5% GST extra).

Day-wise itinerary

  1. 00Day 0Delhi to Manali

    Leave Delhi for Manali by Volvo bus at 7:30 PM. Overnight journey to Manali.

  2. 01Day 1Manali sightseeing and self exploration

    Check in to the hotel (12 noon), freshen up and relax. After breakfast, explore Manali on your own. Places to visit: Hadimba Temple, Jogni Waterfall, Vashisht Temple and Mall Road. Dinner, a briefing for the next day and an overnight stay.

  3. 02Day 2Manali to Gumbok Rangan

    Wake up early, collect the bikes and check out from the hotel. Ride on the Leh–Manali Highway. Drive through Atal Tunnel into Lahaul Valley and along the Chandra river to Keylong, the district headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti. Arrive by evening. Overnight stay in camps at Gumbok Rangan or a homestay in Purne.

  4. 03Day 3Gumbok Rangan to Leh

    After breakfast at the stay, get ready to leave for Leh. Travel over high-altitude roads and passes towards Leh. Arrive by late evening. Check in at a hotel in Leh.

  5. 04Day 4Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La

    Distance: 125 km. Duration: 5 to 6 hours. After breakfast, head towards Nubra Valley. Ride over Khardung La and spend some time at the top. Ride to Diskit Monastery for a view over Nubra Valley. Stop at the Hunder sand dunes, where you can take a double-humped camel ride in the cold desert. Dinner and an overnight stay in camps or cottages at Diskit.

  6. 05Day 5Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok

    After breakfast, drive to Pangong Lake along the Shyok river. Arrive at Pangong Lake, known for its changing colours. Visit the spots where films such as 3 Idiots were shot. Spend the night at a lakeside camp.

  7. 06Day 6Pangong Tso to Hanle via Rezang La

    Ride along the shore of Pangong Tso, passing through Maan, Merak and Chushul. Pay tribute at the Rezang La War Memorial, which honours the soldiers of the 1962 Indo-China War. Continue to the remote village of Hanle, home to an astronomical observatory. Spend the evening at leisure and watch the night sky. Dinner and an overnight stay in a tent or room.

  8. 07Day 7Hanle to Umling La and back

    Ride to Umling La, known as one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Spend some time at the top for the views and photographs. Head back to Hanle for dinner and an overnight stay.

  9. 08Day 8Hanle to Tso Moriri

    After breakfast, begin the ride. Pass through Puga Valley, known for its hot springs. Continue towards Tso Moriri as the landscape changes. Dinner and an overnight stay.

  10. 09Day 9Tso Moriri to Sarchu

    Wake up early and leave for Sarchu after breakfast. Cross the Moore Plains, a flat, straight stretch of road about 40 km long. After lunch at Pang, cross Lachung La and Nakee La. Just before Sarchu, descend the Gata Loops (21 hairpin bends at 4,669 m). Reach Sarchu and check in at the camps. Dinner and an overnight stay.

  11. 10Day 10Sarchu to Manali

    Wake up early and leave after breakfast for a long day on the road. Drive over Baralacha La, one of the more challenging passes on the Leh–Manali Highway. Pass Suraj Tal, a small lake at the top of Baralacha La. Drive through Zingzing Bar, Patsio and Darcha, and over Rohtang La, to reach Manali. Check in to the hotel. Dinner and an overnight stay.

  12. 11Day 11Manali self exploration and departure

    After a relaxed morning and breakfast, you can head out for local sightseeing in Manali. Places you can visit: Hidimba Devi Temple, Jogni Waterfall, Vashisht Temple and Mall Road. Spend some time cafe hopping in the streets of Old Manali. Leave for Delhi in the evening.

  13. 12Day 12Arrival in Delhi

    Reach Delhi in the morning after the overnight journey.

Things to know

Reporting point

The Volvo bus to Manali leaves Delhi at 7:30 PM. The exact boarding point is shared once your booking is confirmed.
  • Prices are per person on triple sharing. Twin sharing is β‚Ή2,500 per person extra and single sharing is β‚Ή7,500 extra.
  • Hotel check-in in Manali is at 12 noon. After check-in you can explore on your own.
  • Any damage to the bike is borne by the rider.
  • You will be travelling through high-altitude cold desert. Consult your doctor before the trip, be physically fit, and tell us about any existing health condition before travelling.
  • Medical facilities are very limited in these remote areas. We help arrange logistics in a medical emergency, but we are not responsible for the emergency and the expenses are borne by the traveller.
  • The itinerary advises Diamox 250 mg (acetazolamide) twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner, starting at least two days before the journey to Leh and continuing for two days after arriving. Check with your doctor before taking it.
  • Avoid physical exertion on your first two days in Leh.
  • Drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water a day, and avoid alcohol, smoking and sedatives.
  • Eat a light meal on the first day at altitude to avoid indigestion.
  • If you notice symptoms of HAPE, HACE or AMS, consult a doctor immediately.
  • An oxygen cylinder is kept in the backup vehicle for emergencies. We recommend carrying portable oxygen as well.
  • Riding gear is provided, but we recommend bringing your own helmet for comfort.
  • Only postpaid mobile networks (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) work in the region.
  • Keep luggage to about 60 litres. You will need to move it between the backup vehicle and the stays.
  • An extra mattress is provided for the third person in triple sharing rooms.
  • Hotels in Ladakh are more basic than in other parts of the country. Stays are subject to availability; if a booked hotel is unavailable, you are moved to a comparable property.
  • Breakfast on the last day depends on your departure time.
  • The itinerary can change because of weather, road conditions, the physical ability of participants or other disruptions. We may change the schedule in the interest of safety and comfort, without changing the overall duration.
  • Rates can change if services or hotels change. Any increase caused by changes you request, such as the number of guests or the hotel, is paid by the traveller.
  • Rescheduling: a change requested at least 15 days before the travel date carries a 30% rescheduling fee. Bookings can't be rescheduled within 15 days of the travel date. If you reschedule and later cancel, the cancellation policy applies and the rescheduling fee isn't refunded.
  • In a force majeure situation (natural disaster, political unrest or similar), we may reschedule the tour or offer an alternative itinerary.

Where does the trip start and end, and how do I get there?

You reach Delhi on your own. The package includes the overnight Volvo from Delhi to Manali, which leaves at 7:30 PM, and the Volvo back. The ride itself starts and ends in Manali, and you reach Delhi in the morning after the last evening in Manali.

What are the travel options and what do they cost?

Per person on triple sharing: β‚Ή16,000 with your own bike, β‚Ή28,000 as a solo rider on a rented bike, β‚Ή25,500 as one of two riders sharing a rented bike, and β‚Ή19,000 in an SUV or Tempo Traveller. 5% GST is extra.

What do twin and single sharing cost?

Twin sharing is β‚Ή2,500 per person extra and single sharing is β‚Ή7,500 extra, on top of the triple sharing price for your travel option. An extra mattress is provided for the third person in triple sharing rooms.

On the biking option, bike rental for 9 days from Manali to Manali is included with fuel. Helmets, elbow guards and knee pads are provided, though we recommend bringing your own gear for comfort. Any damage to the bike is paid for by the rider.

Reserve your seat by paying 50% of the trip cost by net banking or UPI, and pay the rest 4 days before the trip. 5% GST is extra.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 10 days before the travel date and 50% of the advance is refunded; 5 to 10 days before, 25% of the advance; less than 5 days before, there is no refund. There is no refund for no-shows or early check-outs.
