A Chakrata trip from Delhi fits in one weekend: leave Friday night, drive roughly 320–340 km via Dehradun and Kalsi, and you're in the hills by Saturday morning. Two days is enough for Tiger Falls, the Budher caves hike and a sunset at Chilmiri Neck, and you're back in Delhi early on Monday. Our Chakrata weekend trip starts from ₹4,499 per person.

Why Chakrata
Chakrata is an old cantonment town in Dehradun district, set between the Tons and Yamuna rivers at 2,118 m and about 98 km from Dehradun. The British Indian Army set it up in 1869 and it is still an active military cantonment. Because of that, the town has stayed small. You won't find the mall-road crowds of Mussoorie or Nainital, and the market is a short strip rather than a shopping destination.
What you get instead is deodar and oak forest, long ridge views, and several short walks to viewpoints and waterfalls. It suits people who want a quiet weekend with some walking, not a packed sightseeing list.
Who it's not for: anyone after nightlife, big-brand hotels or a lot of shopping. And if anyone in your group holds a foreign passport, read the permit section below before you plan anything.
Getting there: route, distance and time
By road. Most people drive from Delhi to Dehradun first, then on through Vikasnagar and Kalsi to Chakrata. Sources put the total at roughly 320–340 km, and the drive takes 7–9 hours depending on traffic, stops and the hill section. After Vikasnagar the road follows the Yamuna for a stretch before climbing from Kalsi. Chakrata is about 35 km beyond Kalsi. You can also come up from Mussoorie, but most traffic from Delhi uses the Kalsi road.
By train or air. Dehradun is the nearest large railway station and has direct trains from Delhi. Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport is the nearest airport. From either, it's about 98 km by road to Chakrata, so you'll still need a taxi or a shared jeep for the last leg.
On a group trip. Our Chakrata trip runs all travel and transfers in an AC traveller or bus. You leave Delhi on Friday night, reach Chakrata on Saturday morning, and set off back to Delhi after sunset on Sunday.
Hill-road note: during the monsoon, roughly July to August at its peak, landslides and blocked roads are common across Uttarakhand. Start hill stretches early in the day and check road updates before you leave.
Places to see in Chakrata
Tiger Falls
Uttarakhand Tourism says Tiger Falls drops 312 ft (about 95 m) and describes it as one of the highest direct waterfalls in India. It's about 20 km from Chakrata town. The official description mentions a trek of about 5 km through oak and rhododendron. How much you actually walk depends on where your vehicle can stop, so ask locally. The rocks near the water are slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
Chilmiri Neck
Chilmiri Neck (the name is also spelt Chirmiri) is a grassy ridge about 3–4 km from the Chakrata market, depending on where you start measuring. People mainly go for the sunset and the open views over the valleys. It's an easy walk or a short drive.
Budher caves and Moila Top
The Budher caves sit at one corner of Moila Danda, a high meadow (bugyal) that Wikipedia puts at about 2,700–2,760 m. The walk starts at the Budher Forest Rest House, which is roughly 30 km from Chakrata. From there it's about 3 km to the meadow, through thick deodar forest. The caves are dark inside, so carry a torch and don't go deep without someone who knows them. On our trip this is the main hike of Day 1, described in our itinerary as a hike of about 5 km in total.
Deoban
Deoban is a forested ridge about 13–16 km from Chakrata at roughly 2,800–2,900 m, depending on the source. There is an old forest rest house, and on clear days you can see the Himalayan ranges through the deodars. It's also one of the likeliest places near Chakrata to see snow in winter. Deoban is not on our 1N/2D itinerary. If you're driving yourself and have a spare half day, it's worth adding.

Day 1 (Saturday): reach Chakrata, Budher caves hike.
- Reach Chakrata in the morning, check in at the resort and rest for a while.
- Drive out for the hike to Budher caves (about 5 km).
- Come back to the resort in the evening for a bonfire with snacks and music, then dinner and the overnight stay.
Day 2 (Sunday): Tiger Falls and Chirmiri Neck Top.
- Breakfast, check out, and head to Tiger Falls.
- Move on to Chirmiri Neck Top for the sunset.
- Leave for Delhi after sunset. You reach Delhi early on Monday morning.
The trip highlights also include Moila Top and a walk around Chakrata Market.

Best time to go, and snow

If snow is the main reason you're going, keep your dates flexible and check the forecast a few days ahead. Snow in Chakrata depends on the weather each winter, so nobody can promise it for a given weekend. In winter, pack thermals, a proper jacket, gloves, a cap and shoes with grip. Even in summer, carry a fleece for the evenings.
Chakrata foreigners permit: the current rule
Chakrata is an access-restricted military cantonment and the permanent base of the Special Frontier Force. Foreign nationals face serious restrictions on visiting. Wikipedia and several traveller forums say foreigners can generally travel as far as Kalsi and need prior permission to go further. This is a long-standing restriction, not a new 2026 rule, and we couldn't find an official public page that sets out a current application process.
What that means in practice:
- Indian citizens don't need any permit to visit Chakrata.
- Foreign passport holders (including OCI card holders, to be safe) should not plan a Chakrata trip without confirming permission in advance with the local authorities.
- If someone in your group holds a foreign passport, talk to us before booking.

Budget a little extra for: lunches on both days and any snacks or tea on the road, entry tickets where they apply, and personal spending at Chakrata Market. None of these are in the package.
