The simplest way to reach Kainchi Dham from Delhi is by road: it's roughly 320–330 km via Moradabad, Haldwani and Bhowali, and usually takes 7–10 hours. If you'd rather not drive, take the Shatabdi or another train to Kathgodam (the nearest railway station, about 35–38 km away) and a taxi for the last hour or so. Weekend crowds are the one thing that can really slow you down, so plan around them.

Kainchi Dham is the ashram of Neem Karoli Baba in Nainital district, Uttarakhand. It sits beside the small Shipra river on the Nainital–Almora road, about 9 km from Bhowali and 17 km from Nainital. The Hanuman temple here was consecrated on 15 June 1964, and the ashram has since become one of the most visited spots in Kumaon.
From Delhi you have four realistic options:
- Drive or hire a taxi all the way (7–10 hours).
- Take a bus to Haldwani, then a taxi or shared jeep up the hill.
- Take a train to Kathgodam, then a taxi (roughly 1–1.5 hours).
- Fly to Pantnagar, then a taxi (roughly 2–2.5 hours).
For most people coming for a weekend, road or train works best. Flights save time on paper, but there are only a couple a day and you still have a long taxi ride at the other end.
Distance and route
The usual road route is Delhi → Hapur → Moradabad → Rampur → Haldwani → Kathgodam → Bhimtal or Bhowali → Kainchi Dham. The plains stretch up to Haldwani is fast highway; after Kathgodam you start climbing, and the last 35–40 km are mountain road with bends, so drive time depends heavily on traffic near Bhimtal and Bhowali.
Plan on 7–10 hours door to door. Leaving Delhi very early (or overnight, as our group trips do) helps you clear the plains before traffic builds, and reach the hills in daylight.
Ways to reach
All figures below are approximate, as of September 2026. Train and flight schedules change, so check IRCTC and airline sites before you book.

By train: the New Delhi–Kathgodam Shatabdi Express runs daily and covers the 282 km in about five and a half hours. As of September 2026 it leaves New Delhi early in the morning and reaches Kathgodam around midday, which gets you to Kainchi by mid-afternoon. Kathgodam also has overnight trains from Delhi if you'd rather travel while you sleep. Taxis wait outside the station.
By bus: Uttarakhand and UP state roadways buses, plus private Volvo and sleeper buses, run from Anand Vihar ISBT to Haldwani through the day and night. There's no direct bus to Kainchi Dham itself, so plan on a taxi or a local shared vehicle from Haldwani.
By air: IndiGo flies Delhi to Pantnagar, usually a couple of times a day. Pantnagar is about 26 km from Haldwani, and from there it's the same hill road up via Bhimtal or Bhowali.
Timings and tips
Timings. Published darshan timings don't agree. Different sources list opening anywhere from about 5–7 AM and closing from about 6–8 PM, with shorter hours in winter. A safe window is roughly 7 AM to 6 PM, but treat that as a guide only (checked September 2026) and confirm locally on the day, especially if you're arriving late.
Weekend traffic rules. As of September 2026, Nainital police stop taxis and two-wheelers from going right up to the shrine on Saturdays and Sundays. Vehicles coming via Bhimtal park at the Bhimtal Vikas Bhawan lot, and those coming via Nainital or Gethia park at the Bhowali Sanatorium lot; shuttles run from both to Kainchi Dham. These arrangements have changed from season to season, so check the latest Nainital police advisory before you go.
Practical tips:
- Go early. Early morning on a weekday is the calmest time for darshan.
- Dress modestly and follow whatever rules are posted at the gate on the day. The ashram is a place of worship first, not a sightseeing stop.
- Carry a layer. Even in summer, the valley can feel cool in the morning and after sunset.
- Budget time for the queue, not just the drive. On busy days the wait can be longer than the darshan itself.
- Entry is free, but keep some cash for prasad, parking or the shuttle.
When to avoid
- 15 June (foundation day). The Kainchi Dham Mela marks the day the temple was consecrated in 1964. In 2026, local reports put the crowd in the tens of thousands by mid-morning, and the district ran special traffic arrangements from 13 to 16 June, with private vehicles parked away from the ashram and shuttle buses in between. Unless you specifically want to be there for the mela, skip the days around 15 June.
- Weekends and long weekends. Visitor numbers have grown sharply in recent years (Wikipedia cites around 24 lakh in 2024), and weekend jams between Bhimtal, Bhowali and Kainchi are common enough that police now run a dedicated weekend plan.
- Peak monsoon (roughly July and August). Hill roads in Kumaon can see landslides and delays. Check road updates before setting out.
- Late arrivals. Reaching after the gates close means a wasted trip. Build in slack for the hill section.
If your dates are flexible, a weekday in March to May or September to November is the easiest time to visit.
Pair it with Mukteshwar
Kainchi Dham is a short visit, so most people combine it with somewhere to stay the night. Mukteshwar is a good match. It sits at roughly 2,170–2,290 m (sources differ), about 40 km beyond Bhowali, so around 50 km from Kainchi by road. Expect 1.5–2.5 hours for that drive depending on traffic.
What Mukteshwar adds:
- The Mukteshwar Mahadev temple, an old Shiva temple on a hilltop.
- Chauli ki Jali, the cliff edge beside the temple with open views over the valley.
- Himalayan views on clear days, especially after rain and in the cooler months.
- Quieter nights than Nainital, with orchards and forest around.
Nainital and Bhimtal are also close enough to add a few hours of lakeside time on the way back. That's exactly the loop our weekend trip follows.
Our weekend trip
Our Mukteshwar & Kainchi Dham trip is a 1 Night / 2 Days weekend getaway. It leaves Delhi every Friday night and you're back early Monday morning.
Day 1: Arrival in Mukteshwar. Reach Mukteshwar in the morning and check in to Swiss camps or rooms. In the afternoon there's a short 1.5 km hike to a local waterfall, then Chauli ki Jali and the Mukteshwar Temple. The evening is a bonfire with music, followed by dinner.
Day 2: Adventure and sightseeing. After breakfast, check out and try the adventure activities. In the afternoon, visit Kainchi Dham, then carry on to Nainital or Bhimtal for some easy sightseeing. The group leaves for Delhi at 9 PM and reaches early the next morning.
Because Day 2 falls on a Sunday, expect the weekend shuttle arrangement near Kainchi if it's in force that week.
