Overview

Kedarkantha is a well-known winter trek in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, with snow on the trail from December to April and a summit at 12,500 ft (3,810 m). It starts from Sankri village and is graded easy to moderate. This 4 Nights / 5 Days trek runs from Dehradun to Dehradun by shared taxi: you need to reach Dehradun on your own, and the group drives about 200 km to Sankri on Day 1. Batches run every Friday, and every day from November to February.

Day 1 is the drive to Sankri and a homestay night. Day 2 is a 4 km trek to Juda Ka Talab (8,900 ft). Day 3 is a 4 km trek to Kedarkantha Base Camp (11,200 ft). Day 4 starts around 3-4 AM for the summit at sunrise, then descends to Juda Ka Talab. Day 5 is the walk down to Sankri and the drive back to Dehradun by evening. Transport from Dehradun, the homestay and tents, vegetarian meals on the trek, permits, equipment and trek leaders are included. Prices start at β‚Ή5,499 per person (5% GST extra); dual sharing accommodation costs β‚Ή1,000 extra per person.

Day-wise itinerary

  1. 01Day 1Dehradun to Sankri (about 200 km drive)

    Distance: about 200 km. Travel time: 7-8 hours by car. Reach Sankri and check in to the homestay. Spend the evening around the village and prepare for the trek. Dinner and overnight stay in Sankri.

  2. 02Day 2Sankri to Juda Ka Talab camp

    Altitude: about 8,900 ft. Trek distance: about 4 km. Trek duration: 3-4 hours. After breakfast, start the trek from Sankri through pine and maple forest. The trail has gradual ascents and passes through meadows. Reach Juda Ka Talab, a high-altitude lake surrounded by forest. Dinner and overnight stay in tents at Juda Ka Talab.

  3. 03Day 3Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp

    Altitude: about 11,200 ft. Trek distance: about 4 km. Trek duration: 3-4 hours. Start after breakfast towards Kedarkantha Base Camp. The trail has steep ascents and opens to views of snow-covered peaks. Walk through snow-covered meadows and rhododendron trees. Reach Kedarkantha Base Camp by afternoon. Spend the evening acclimatising, with views of the surrounding peaks. Dinner and overnight stay in tents at the base camp.

  4. 04Day 4Summit climb (12,500 ft) | Return to Juda Ka Talab

    Altitude: summit at about 12,500 ft. Trek distance: about 6 km round trip (3 km up and 3 km down). Trek duration: 6-7 hours. Start early, around 3-4 AM, to reach the summit for sunrise. The trail to the summit is steep, with 360-degree views of the Himalayan ranges from the top. Spend some time at the summit, then descend to Kedarkantha Base Camp for lunch. Continue the descent to Juda Ka Talab. Dinner and overnight stay in tents at Juda Ka Talab.

  5. 05Day 5Juda Ka Talab to Sankri | Drive to Dehradun

    Trek distance: about 4 km. Trek duration: 2-3 hours. After breakfast, trek downhill from Juda Ka Talab to Sankri. Reach Kotgaon/Sankri by mid-morning, where the vehicle will be waiting. Drive back to Dehradun and arrive by evening.

  • No refund for no-shows or early check-outs.
  • Meals, activities or services you don't use aren't adjusted or refunded.
  • If a trip is cancelled because of political unrest, government guidelines, extremely poor weather or unsafe conditions, you get a full credit (equal to the amount paid) to use on any future Travel Devils booking, not a cash refund.

Dehradun. Transport is by shared taxi from Dehradun to Sankri on Day 1. The exact pickup point and time are shared once your booking is confirmed.
  • This trek runs Dehradun to Dehradun. You travel to and from Dehradun on your own.
  • The summit day starts around 3-4 AM and takes 6-7 hours before the further descent to Juda Ka Talab.
  • A raincoat or poncho is a must.
  • Mule or porter charges for personal luggage and emergency evacuation charges are extra.
  • Carry a valid government-approved photo ID. There is no boarding without it.
  • The departure time is fixed. Keep your phone reachable and update your trip coordinator; they will try calling you, but we can't hold the bus.
  • The itinerary can change because of weather, road conditions or safety. All sightseeing is subject to weather and local authority guidelines.
  • Travel insurance isn't included. We recommend buying it before the trip.
  • Any increase in entry fees, taxes or fuel costs by the government after booking is charged extra.
  • Extra costs from delays outside our control (natural calamity, vehicle breakdown, road closures) are borne by travellers.
  • Damage to room or camp furnishings is payable by the guest responsible.

What do I need to carry?

A backpack, trekking shoes, a trekking pole, an LED torch, a one-litre water bottle, a lunch box, a trekking jacket, warm layers, thermals, two trek pants, full-sleeve dry-fit T-shirts, gloves, a woollen cap, three pairs of socks, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm and your medicines. A raincoat or poncho is a must. Carry a valid government-approved photo ID as well.

How do I book and pay?

Reserve your seat by paying 50% of the trip cost, and pay the rest at least 4 days before the trip. 5% GST is added to the price.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 10 days before the travel date and 50% of the advance is refunded; 5 to 10 days before, 25% of the advance; less than 5 days before, there is no refund. There is no refund for no-shows or early check-outs.
